The Jack, Knave, Bower, or Valet is the first face card, between the ten and Queen.

In the Paris pattern deck, they are associated with a historical or mythological figure, and are as follows:

Clubs: Lancelot or Judas Maccabeus
Diamonds: Hector
Hearts: La Hire
Spades: Ogier the Dane
