In large, tightly packed groups, these penguins take turns entering the warm center to shelter from the icy winds. In order to keep the chicks especially cozy, the eggs are kept inside the father's pouch. The mother lays only one egg each year, then returns for two months to the sea.

Famous for imitating the calls of other birds, as well as cars and sirens, or other sounds, it dwells in scrub woodlands and gardens, eating insects - and colorful berries. The state bird of Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas, it ranges south of the Great Lakes, in South Dakota and Oregon.
